Having endured a much similar concept in 2005′s Ultimate Girls, I wasn’t expecting Robot Girls Z to be anything other than a train wreck. There’s just something about how trying to change classic shows into classic shows with moe girls that makes everything else unimportant. Would this 70s mecha as girls work as badly as I thought?
First of all, I wasn’t going into this show expecting a great amount of plot. It’s supposed to be an episodic comedy. With this series being released in sets of 3 episodes a month, there was enough to see what this show was setting out to do. It’s attempting to be a fun comedy that uses the tropes of 70s mecha series to further the humor. Surprisingly, I thought that it did the job pretty well.
The first episode introduces the cast where the hopelessly inept villains end up getting beaten up by the new versions of Grendizer, Mazinger and Great Mazinger. However, with this being a show that is filled with irony, the good guys destroy a city block trying to get rid of them. The second episode is much better with baddie after baddie being introduced with their own problems and clearly unfit to fight anyone. The third and final episode of this batch is the obligatory beach/swimsuit episode. That doesn’t actually work as well.
The real measure of how this worked for me is that I thought it didn’t really require any sort of knowledge of 70s mecha anime at all. I even would have said that the it was pretty kid friendly and also worked for older adults. At least until the sea urchin girl in the 3rd episode appeared. Oh well, at least I still found it entertaining.
